Free Browser Games to Play With Friends Online

If you want a free game to play with friends without anyone installing anything, Mutiny Games has three that run in a browser tab: Last Ember, a co-op survival roguelike for up to 4; Grindzone, speedball paintball where bots fill out the teams; and Mimic, a social deduction party game for 4 to 10. All three are free, and friends join with a room code.

Which one fits depends on how many of you there are, whether you want a long session or quick rounds, and whether your group likes to talk. The table below compares them, and each section after it says who the game is for.

Quick picks

  • Two to four friends who want a longer session with progress that carries over: Last Ember co-op.
  • A small or uneven group that wants quick action: Grindzone, since bots fill out the teams.
  • Practicing alone before the group shows up: Grindzone against bots, or a solo Last Ember run.
  • Four to ten friends who love social deduction: Mimic.

Last Ember: co-op survival for up to 4

Last Ember is a survival roguelike in full 3D, with a pixel-art Classic mode for older machines. Your fire is your life: gather by day, hold the light by night, and build a survivor who gets stronger every run. Play solo or with up to 3 friends.

How co-op works

  • Joining: host a lobby, pick the mode, map and difficulty, chat, swap survivors and ready up, then start. Share the four-character code, or make the lobby public so it shows under Open games.
  • Late arrivals: friends can still join a run that has already started, and after a run the host takes everyone back to the lobby.
  • Helping each other: revive a downed teammate, defend the fire and the outpost camps, and take on a boss every fifth night. When you are down, the camera follows a teammate who is still up.
  • Your progress stays yours: every survivor keeps their own XP, skills and loot, and gear stays with the survivor who found it.
  • Every mode works in co-op: Survival, Expedition, the Daily Challenge, The Long Night and Boss Rush.

Friends and messages

Last Ember has its own friends list. Pick a name and you get a tag like Ash#1234. Add friends by tag, see who is online and what they are playing, invite them to your lobby or jump into theirs, and message them from the menu or mid-run. That means a voice call helps but is not required.

Last Ember suits groups who want a longer session and a reason to come back, with 12 classes to split between you and a Homestead that grows between runs. Start with the Last Ember co-op guide and the classes guide so your party covers its bases. Play Last Ember.

Grindzone: speedball paintball, one hit and you sit

Grindzone is speedball paintball in 3D. Lean around inflatable bunkers, snap-shoot, slide into cover and hang the flag. Make a room and send the code, and bots that actually play speedball fill out the teams. They pick a bunker, tuck in, peek out on a cycle and lead their shots.

Four modes

ModeHow you winRespawn
EliminationFirst to 5 points. Wipe the other team to take a point.None, one hit and you sit
Center FlagFirst to 3 hangs. Grab the flag at the 50 and hang it on their station. After 5 seconds
Team DeathmatchMost eliminations in 5 minutes, red against blueAfter 3 seconds
Free For AllMost eliminations in 5 minutes, everyone for themselvesAfter 3 seconds

What else to know

  • Devices: mouse and keyboard on a computer, or on a phone drag the left half to move, the right half to look, and use the on-screen buttons to fire, jump, lean, crouch and go prone.
  • Settings: play at midday, golden hour, or at night under the lights.
  • Your kit: pick your helmet and marker colors, jersey and number. Your eliminations, hits taken, wins and hit rate are saved.

Grindzone is the best pick when your group is small or uneven, because the bots fill the gaps, and when you want short rounds you can drop in and out of. Read how to play Grindzone, Grindzone modes explained and the Grindzone tips. Play Grindzone.

Mimic: one of you isn't who they seem

Mimic is a social deduction party game for 4 to 10 friends. Everyone walks the Relay, a mountaintop broadcast station, doing quick tasks. One to three players are secretly the Mimic: they silence the crew one by one, crawl through ducts, sabotage the station and copy other players' faces. Find a body, report it. Something feels off, ring the bell. Then everyone argues it out and votes someone off.

How a game goes

  • Tasks: 15 quick mini-games across 10 rooms, like swiping your badge, patching cables and fueling the generator. The crew wins by finishing every task or voting out every Mimic.
  • The Mimic: silences crew members, ducts between rooms and can copy another player's look and name for a few seconds. It wins by matching the crew in numbers, or when a meltdown goes unstopped.
  • Meetings: talk time in the text chat, then a vote with a skip. The top vote is ejected, and ties eject nobody.
  • Ghosts: silenced players keep doing their tasks and chat with other ghosts.

Before you start

  • No mic needed. Meetings use text chat, so Mimic works on its own. A voice call on the side makes it louder and funnier.
  • No accounts. Type a name, start a room and send the four-letter code or the invite link.
  • Phones work, with an on-screen stick and big buttons.
  • Practice alone to walk the station and try every task before the group shows up.

Mimic is for groups who love social deduction, and it is the pick for the biggest group, with room for ten. Start with how to play Mimic, the tasks and map guide and the strategy guide. Play Mimic.

How do you play these games on Discord?

All three work alongside Discord, in slightly different ways.

  1. Start a voice call in your server or a group DM.
  2. One person hosts the game and pastes the room code (or Mimic's invite link) in the chat.
  3. Everyone opens the link in their browser. There is nothing to install.
  4. For Mimic, stay on the Discord call. Mimic has no voice of its own, and talking during meetings is half the fun. Out on the station, the crew should stay quiet about what they see until a meeting is called.

If a room will not connect, our devlog on how our room codes work explains what is happening behind the code.

Can you play in the same room?

Yes. Each player needs their own screen. Last Ember and Grindzone play fine with everyone on their own computer in one room. Mimic works the same way, and in one room the meetings are just people talking across the table. Keep your screen to yourself, since the Mimic sees a different screen from the crew.

Do these games cost anything?

No. All three are free to play in your browser. Last Ember has optional accounts: guests save on their own device and move into the account on first sign-in, and an account lets you keep up to 24 survivors.
